Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
SAVANNAH, GA - Charleston RiverDogs starter Brett Marshall was nearly perfect as the RiverDogs beat the Gnats 8-0 in a game that was shortened to six innings by rain Wednesday night at Historic Grayson Stadium.
Marshall (4-2, 2.63) did not allow a baserunner through five and a third innings. However, Savannah right-fielder Nick Santomauro broke up Marshall's bid for perfection with a double to deep right-center field in the sixth. In his six innings, Marshall struck out four and faced just one batter over the minimum. The Gnats (24-34/66-62) hit just two balls to the outfield all night: Santomauro's double and a line out from 1B Travis Ozgain the second inning. Marshall induced eight ground ball outs and three infield pop outs.
The RiverDogs (30-29/61-67) got on the board first with a three-run first inning against Savannah starter Taylor Whitenton (8-7, 3.90). With two outs, 1B Rob Lyerly doubled into the right field corner to drive home a run. LF Neil Medchill then followed with a two-run homer to left field to make the score 3-0 Dogs.
Charleston increased its advantage through the middle innings. A solo home run from 3B Kevin Mahoney in the fourth made it 4-0. The 'Dogs made it 8-0 with a four-run sixth against reliever Guillaume Leduc. Medchill capped the scoring in the inning with a two-run double.
