
Suns Edged by Shorebirds 4-3

The Hagerstown Suns (25-34, 61-68) fell to the Delmarva Shorebirds (24-35, 56-73) in the series opener 4-3.
The Suns got on the board first against Shorebirds starter Matt Hobgood with an RBI single by J.P. Ramirez, scoring Rick Hague from second for a 1-0 lead.
The game would be tied in the next half-inning against Suns starter Paul Applebee (5-5). With first and third and no out, Omar Casamayor hit a short single to right to bring in Mike Flacco the tie the game at one. Next batter with runners on the corners, Michael Planeta grounded into a double play, with Casamayor out at second and Levi Carolus out in a rundown between third and home. The scoring ended at one run in the frame.
In the top of the third, Delmarva took the lead off an RBI triple in the right field corner from Trent Mummey to score T.J. Baxter from second. Next batter, Tyler Kelly reached on error by the shortstop, allowing Mummey to score for a 3-1 advantage for the Shorebirds.
Next half-inning, the Suns got the run back with an Adrian Sanchez RBI ground out to short, allowing Eury Perez to score from third to half the deficit at 3-2.
The first half of the fourth saw Delmarva regain a two-run lead with a fielder's choice from Mummey to second, scoring Garabez Rosa to put the score at 4-2 Delmarva.
Hagerstown mirrored their scoring in the bottom of the fifth off Delmarva reliever Will Startup (1-0), as Ramirez hit his second RBI single to score Hague to put the Suns within one run.
Despite the Suns getting a runner on third in two innings with a one run deficit, the Shorebirds held on for the 4-3 win.
Hobgood got a no-decision after throwing four innings, allowing two runs with three strikeouts. Startup got the win after throwing three innings of relief, allowing one run and striking out six. James Brandhorst got his fifth save with two scoreless frames.
Applebee got the loss with 6.1 innings pitched, allowing four runs and striking out four batters. Wanel Vasquez threw two and two-thirds innings of scoreless relief.
The Suns and Shorebirds will play game two of the set on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. Gates to Municipal Stadium open at 6:00 p.m.
