LAST NIGHT: West Virginia lost 2-1 to Rome on Monday night. Quinton Miller allowed a run in the second and a run in the eighth during one of his best outings of the season, but the Power offense was held in check. West Virginia outhit Rome 8-7, but all eight hits were singles, while the Braves had four doubles. Ramon Cabrera and Bengie Gonzalez had two hits each, and Cabrera scored the lone Power run on a wild pitch in the ninth.
FIRST OF ITS KIND: West Virginia's loss Monday was the first time this season that the opposition won a game with less than three runs scored. The Power are now 23-1 when holding their opponents to zero, one, or two runs in a game. When the opposition scores between 3-7 runs, West Virginia is 30-45, and when they score eight or more in a game, the Power are 4-23.
VASQUEZ JOINS ACTIVE ROSTER: The Pittsburgh Pirates added infielder Andy Vasquez to West Virginia's active roster earlier today. The switch-hitter batted .220 for State College during 16 games this season, with two home runs and six runs batted in. Vasquez was signed as an international free agent on September 4, 2006, but will make his South Atlantic League debut when he first appears for the Power. No counter move was needed as West Virginia had been one man shy of a full compliment since Melkin Laureano was placed on the disable list on August 4.
STREAKING: David Rubinstein is riding an eight game hitting streak into his next contest. It is the fourth streak of six games or more for the All-Star outfielder. This current run has seen Rubinstein reach with exactly one base hit in each of his last eight games, going 8-28 with one home run and five runs batted in. The Appalachian State product has played in 102 games this season, despite the fact he did not become an everyday player until mid-May.
NEARLY GOING THE DISTANCE: Quinton Miller pitched seven and two thirds innings last night in his longest professional outing. The right-hander had gone six innings twice during the 2009 season, and had also pitched seven innings once this season (8/12).
WALK OF LIFE: Evan Chambers leads the South Atlantic League with 87 walks and ranks across all of Minor League Baseball, trailing only Conner Crumbliss of Kane County (107), Lake Elsinore's Vincent Belnome (95), West Michigan's Jamie Johnson (91), and a pack of four players with 88 walks each.
POWER POINTS: West Virginia has been outscored 88-64 in first innings this year, including 9-0 during their recent four game losing streak... Evan Chambers has not played since getting hit in the head by a pitch on last Tuesday... Power starting pitchers are now 12-3 when going seven or more innings this season... Jason Erickson is 2-1 this month, but holds a 6.86 ERA, and is 2-2 since July 1 with a 6.70 earned run average.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh lost 10-2 at PNC Park to St. Louis... Indianapolis dropped a 6-3 final to Louisville... Altoona beat Erie 5-1. Andrew Lambo and Jordy Mercer drove in two runs each... Bradenton did not play ... State College lost 4-1 against Mahoning Valley.
ON THE AIR: All 140 West Virginia Power games can be heard on ESPN Radio 1490 AM in Charleston, WV, across the state on the Power Radio Network, and online at milb.com. Adam Marco will call the action for each of the 70 home games this season, while the home team will provide coverage while the Power are on the road.
