Suns Split Double Header with BlueClaws

The Hagerstown Suns (25-33, 61-67) won game one of the doubleheader with a Marcus Jones walk-off home run in the ninth inning 5-3, and lost game two to the Lakewood BlueClaws (33-24, 75-52) 2-1.

In game one, the Suns struck first with a sacrifice fly by Destin Hood to left, scoring Rick Hague for a 1-0 lead.

Hagerstown held a shutout as they added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth. Four consecutive singles, by Adrian Sanchez, J.P. Ramirez, Hood and Brett Newsome pushed Sanchez home for a second run. Two batters later, Justino Cuevas hit into a fielder's choice at second to score Ramirez for a 3-0 advantage.

Graham Hicks pitched into the sixth, allowing no runs after getting removed with one out and no one on. He struck out three batters.

With Ben Graham in, the BlueClaws scored three runs in the frame, just one earned, to tie the game. The tying run came on an RBI double by Keoni Ruth into left to score Korby Mintken for a 3-3 game.

The game went into extra innings, continuing into the bottom of the ninth. After Cuevas reached on an error with two outs, Marcus Jones hit a walk-off two run home run to right off Luke Wertz (4-4) to win the game for the Suns 5-3.

Josh Smoker pitched a scoreless seventh inning for Hagerstown in relief. Kyle Morrison (3-5) got his third win after not allowing a run in the eighth and ninth frames.

BlueClaws starter Brody Colvin threw five innings, allowing three runs in the no decision.

Game two saw Lakewood get on the scoreboard first. With first and second and two out, Alan Schoenberger reached on an error by Rick Hague at short, allowing Jeremy Barnes to score for a 1-0 lead. Next batter, Jiwan James hit an RBI single up the middle to score Anthony Hewitt for a second run.

In the bottom of the third, the Suns got their first run. With Eury Perez off of the pitch from second, Hague hit a single up the middle to score the Suns outfielder to cut the score to 2-1. However, it was the eventual final score.

Suns starter Paul Demny (6-8) got the loss, throwing 4.2 innings and allowing two runs, both unearned, with four strikeouts. Shane Erb threw two-and-a-third innings of relief, not allowing a hit or a run.

Mike McGuire threw three innings with one run allowed in his start for Lakewood, but did not pitch the minimum to get a win. Reliever Eric Massingham (4-2) got the victory, not allowing a run in three frames with four strikeouts. Ebelin Lugo got his sixth save pitching a scoreless seventh.

The Suns will continue their homestand as they face the Delmarva Shorebirds in the first contest of a four-game set on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. Gates to Municipal Stadium open at 6:00 p.m.
