SUNDAY: The Power closed the first half of the 2010 season with an 11-7 loss to Hagerstown at Appalachian Power Park. The Suns scored six early runs, but the Power rallied to tie the game after six innings on home runs by Aaron Baker (solo), Jose Hernandez (two-run), and Rogelio Noris (three-run jimmy jack). Hagerstown scored four against Duke Welker in the seventh to regain the lead for good.
LOOKING BACK TO LOOK AHEAD: During their first season as a Pirates affiliate, the Power went 27-43 during the first half of the season. The club hit .254 during the first 70 games and held a staff ERA of 4.66. West Virginia finished the '09 campaign with a .262 club average, a staff ERA of 4.18, and a 67-70 record for the year by going 40-27 in the second half. The 2010 edition of the Power hit .235 during the front half of the year, held a staff earned run average of 4.28, and finished 31-39.
A DOZEN AND A HALF: Jarek Cunningham extended his current hitting streak to 18 straight with sixth inning double. The second baseman is batting .371 during this stretch, which dates back to May 31, and has seen his average climb from .243 to .282 with 26 hits in 70 at bats. He has also hit three home runs and driven in 13 runs over his last 18 games. Cunningham's current streak is the longest active run in the league.
ROSTER MOVE: Jhonathan Ramos was transferred off the West Virginia roster yesterday and placed on the State College Spikes roster. Ramos made his South Atlantic League debut in May and appeared in eight games for the Power, going 0-1 with an 8.40 ERA. Ramos made two starts in his final two appearances with West Virginia, and the southpaw was 0-1 with a 12.85 earned run average in those two games.
POWER ALL-STARS: West Virginia placed four players on the 2010 South Atlantic League's Northern Division All-Star team. Ramon Cabrera, Aaron Baker, David Rubinstein, and Nathan Baker were selected by the managers, staff, fans, and media to compete in the mid-season classic, and three of the players appeared in the game. Aaron Baker was the starting designated hitter and went 0-3 with a walk. Rubinstein entered defensively in the fifth inning and had two hits in two at bats, while Cabrera came on a s a defensive replacement in the seventh and walked in his lone plate appearance. The game ended after ten innings in a five all tie.
POWER POINTS: Gabriel Alvarado was suspended by the South Atlantic League during the All-Star break and will miss the first three games of the second half. Alvarado became the first Power player to be ejected from a game this season when he was ushered off by umpire Jonathan Bailey during the fourth inning after an altercation with Destin Hood on June 18... David Rubinstein has hit safely in each of his last seven games.
