Lexington Legends News Release
The Lexington Legends scored five runs in the first inning and never looked back as they opened the second half of the South Atlantic League season with a 13-2 win over the Rome Braves Thursday night at Applebee's Park.
Miguel Arrendell led the way with four hits in five at-bats. He also scored four runs.
Arrendell's one-out single started the Legends' first-inning fireworks. After J.D. Martinez flied out for the second out, Kody Hinze, who had three hits in the game, singled, moving Arrendell to second. Jake Goebbert was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Jonathan Meyer walked to force in a run, and Jiovanni Mier followed with a double to score two more. Aaron Bray's single scored Meyer and Mier, and gave the Legends a 5-0 lead.
Lexington added another run in the second. Arrendell singled, went to second when Martinez was hit by a pitch and scored on Hinze's single. Hinze leads the South Atlantic League with 60 RBI.
The Legends scored four more times in the third inning. A single by Mier, an error on a grounder hit by Bray, an infield out and a two-run single by Grant Hogue made the score 8-0. Arrendell followed Hogue's hit with a single, and Martinez doubled to score both Hogue and Arrendell to give the Legends a 10-0 lead.
Rome scored both its runs in the fifth inning. Chris Curley, a former Campbellsville University star, singled with one out and went to third on a double by Matt Weaver. Kyle Rose drove in one run with an infield out, and Jordan Kreke followed with a double to score the second run. The Legends added two in the sixth and one in the eighth on a bases-loaded walk to Bray, one of seven walks the Legends received in the game.
Legends' starter Tanner Bushue (4-3) pitched the first five innings to get the win. Robinson Lopez (3-4), who pitched only the first inning, was the losing pitcher. The two teams will play the second of a five-game series Friday night at Applebee's Park. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
