Intimidators Start Strong, Win 4-2

With the second half, brings new life and first place for the Kannapolis Intimidators as they opened the second 70-games of the season with a 4-2 defeat of the Augusta GreenJackets on Thursday night at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium.

Cameron Bayne went for and achieved his fourth straight winning decision with seven strong innings. Bayne (6-6) went seven, allowed nine hits but just two runs for his team-leading sixth win of the year.

Bayne allowed a run in the second inning but in the bottom half, the Intimidators (1-0) worked Brady Shoemaker on with a hit by pitch followed by a double by Jose Vargas. With second and third and no one out, Miguel Gonzalez tied the game with a sacrifice fly to deep left center.

Bayne allowed his second and final run in the fifth as the GreenJackets (0-1) took a 2-1 lead, but in the bottom half of the inning off starter Chris Heston, the Intimidators tied and took the lead. Jordan Cheatham walked to lead off the inning, the Intimidators had a lead off runner on in the first seven innings of the game, and after a groundout, Daniel Wagner doubled to left scoring Cheatham and getting in position for an Ian Gac RBI single to take a 3-2 lead.

Heston (2-8) went 5.1 innings and allowed eight hits and all four runs as he exited in the sixth inning. In the sixth, Heston allowed a lead off single to Oester before a ground out and a wild pitch put him in position to score on a sacrifice fly by Cheatham to take a 4-2 lead. Heston now leads the SAL in losses with eight.

After Bayne, JR Ballinger pitched a 1-2-3 eighth and Brandon Kloess, fresh off 1.2 scoreless innings at the All-Star Game on Tuesday, worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his eighth save of the season.

The GreenJackets finished 12 games above .500 in the first half but one game shy of first place. The Intimidators ended the half winning just five of their last 19 games but wake up tomorrow in first place in the second half winning their first game.

Looking to stay atop the standings Justin Collop will start the 7:05 pm game at home for the Intimidators and he will be opposed by Jorge Bucardo.
