Augusta GreenJackets News Release

Kannapolis, NC - The Kannapolis Intimidators scored three times in the fifth and sixth innings to jump out to a two-run lead that held up for a 4-2 win over the Augusta GreenJackets on Thursday night in the second-half opener for both teams.

Augusta had a pair of short-lived leads in the game, with the first coming in the second inning. Daniel Cook reached on a fielder's choice and scurried home on a wild pitch to give the GreenJackets a 1-0 lead in the top of the second. Kannapolis struck back in the bottom half of the inning, putting a pair aboard the bases to open the inning before Miguel Gonzalez's sacrifice fly tied the game at one.

The second GreenJackets advantage occurred thanks to three straight hits in the fifth inning of Intimidators starter Cameron Bayne. Ydwin Villegas and Evan Crawford singled with one out and Villegas scored on the second of Nick Liles' three hits to put the Jackets up a run at the game's halfway point. Further GreenJackets opportunities were thwarted by a double play ball in the third inning and eight stranded runners on base throughout.

Again the lead didn't last long as Kannapolis scored twice in their half of the inning and never looked back. Daniel Wagner's one-out double scored Jordan Cheatham to tie things at two. Ian Gac's single scored Wagner to give Kannapolis the advantage. The Intimidators tacked another on the sixth thanks to Cheatham's sacrifice fly.

Chris Heston scattered eight hits in a 5.1 inning stint that became his third straight loss. Heston (2-8) allowed four runs and two walks with just two strikeouts. It was the first time in his last four starts that Heston didn't strike out at least five and the first time in his last two that he didn't allow five hits or fewer.

Bayne (6-6) came away with the win despite allowing nine hits in a seven inning performance. He yielded just two runs, walked one and struck out two in a game that featured just eight strikeouts combined between the two teams - four each.

The GreenJackets will send All-Star Jorge Bucardo (7-2, 1.77) to the bump in the second game of the series as they shoot for their first win of the second half. Justin Collop (4-5, 5.98) will oppose in a matchup of righties. First pitch will come at 7:05 p.m. with the pregame action beginning at 6:50 p.m. on WRDW AM 1630, www.greenjacketsbaseball.com and www.wrdwam.com.
