Hagerstown Suns News Release
JP Ramirez hit his seventh home run of the season to start the scoring on Thursday and drove in the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Hagerstown Suns (37-34, 1-0) a 4-3 victory over the Hickory Crawdads (40-31, 0-1.
Ramirez, the Suns left fielder, got the Hagerstown offense going in the bottom of the second inning with a towering home run to right-center field.
The 1-0 lead did not last long, as Hickory came back with three soft singles against Suns starter Paul Demny to load the bases with two outs in the bottom of the third inning. Demny then threw a curveball that Hickory right fielder Jared Prince leaned his elbow in to, driving in the runner from third base.
Demny got out of the inning with no further damage and the score remained 1-1 until the bottom of the fourth inning.
In the bottom of the 4th, catcher Sandy Leon drew a two-out walk and center fielder Eury Perez homered to right field, giving the Suns a 3-1 lead. The home run was Perez' second of the season.
Both pitching staffs settled in after the fourth inning, and the score remained 3-1 going into the top of the ninth inning. Suns closer Dean Weaver gave up a one-out double to left fielder Cristian Santana and a two-out, two-run home run down the right field line to first baseman Mike Ortiz to bring the score level at 3-3.
In extra innings, Rob Wort (2-0) worked a perfect top of the tenth and the top of the order came up for the Suns in the bottom half of the inning.
With one out, Francisco Soriano singled up the middle. Two batters later Justin Bloxom reached first on a dropped third strike, sending Soriano to second base.
Ramirez then came through with a single to left field, scoring Soriano easily and sending the sold-out Suns crowd home happy with a 4-3 victory.
The Suns and Crawdads will play the second game of their five-game series at Municipal Stadium on Friday at 7:05 p.m.
