Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
SAVANNAH, GA - The Asheville Tourists' pitching staff took a no-hitter into the bottom of the seventh inning on their way to a 2-0 win over the Savannah Sand Gnats (42-29/0-1) Thursday night at Historic Grayson Stadium in the second-half opener.
Savannah 2B Alonzo Harris broke up the no-hit bid with a single off the glove of lunging Asheville (30-40/0-1) shortstop Joey Wong with two outs in the bottom of the seventh.
CF Pedro Zapata doubled leading off the eighth inning for the only other Savannah hit.
Zapata has now hit safely in eight straight games and 18 of his last 19.
The Tourists took a 1-0 lead on a throwing error by Savannah catcher Dock Doyle in the fifth, and added an insurance run in the top of the ninth on an RBI single by Wong.
Savannah right-hander Armando Rodriguez gave up just one unearned run in 4.1 innings to take a tough-luck loss.
LHP Tyler Matzek, ranked by Baseball America as the Rockies #1 prospect, held Savannah hitless in his 5.2 innings of work.
The 19-year old, in his sixth professional start, walked five and struck out five.
