SATURDAY: West Virginia lost 11-5 on Saturday night to Lakewood as the BlueClaws finished a three-game series sweep at Appalachian Power Park. The Power took a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning on a three-run home run by Kyle Morgan, but the West Virginia bullpen faltered, allowing three runs in the seventh and five runs in the eighth. All five eighth inning runs were unearned due to three Power errors. Gabriel Alvarado took the loss, while Morgan drove in four out of the five West Virginia runs.
LUCKY NUMBER 13: Jarek Cunningham extended his current hitting streak to 13 straight with a third inning single on Saturday. The second baseman is batting .372 during this stretch, which dates back to May 31, and has seen his average climb from .243 to .273 with 19 hits in 49 at bats. He has also hit three home runs and driven in 11 runs over his last 13 games. Cunningham's current streak is the longest active run in the league, just two game behind Kyle Skipworth's 15 game streak for Greensboro.
SWEPT & SLIDING: The Power were swept for the first time this season, have lost four straight, and have dropped five of their last six. During this four-game winless drought, West Virginia has been outscored 35-12, have a team batting average of .184, and hold a staff earned run average of 6.43. West Virginia's current streak has matched their longest at four games in a row, from April 18 through 22.
BLANKED: The Power suffered their seventh shutout of the season on Friday. In 2009, during their first year as a Pittsburgh Pirates affiliate, West Virginia was shutout five times. This year's squad has been blanked on April 9, 10, 25 (game two), May 9, 23 (at Lakewood), and 30.
POWER ALL-STARS: West Virginia placed four players on the 2010 South Atlantic League's Northern Division All-Star team. Ramon Cabrera, Aaron Baker, David Rubinstein, and Nathan Baker were selected by the managers, staff, fans, and media to compete in the mid-season classic, to be played at Fluor Field in Greenville, South Carolina on June 22. Aaron Baker will start at designated hitter for the North, which will be managed by Hickory's Bill Richardson. Hagerstown, Hickory, and Kannapolis each placed five representatives on the squad.
STREAKS STOPPED: Power outfielder David Rubinstein had his 11 game hitting streak and 19 game one base streak stopped with an 0-4 performance on Thursday night. The All-Star reserve had hit safely in every game he played between May 27 and June 8. The right fielder hit .381 during this 11-game stretch, and surpassed the previous season-best eight game runs by several West Virginia players this season. Rubinstein's streak is tied for the fifth longest game-wise run this season.
POWER POINTS: Mike Williams save last Monday was the first of his professional career... West Virginia committed 11 errors during the three game series, representing 14% of the total Power errors all season... David Rubinstein had reached base safely by hit or walk in his last 19 consecutive road contests, dating back to April 25 at Kannapolis.
ON THE AIR: All 140 West Virginia Power games can be heard on ESPN Radio 1490 AM in Charleston, WV, across the state on the Power Radio Network, and online at milb.com. Adam Marco will call the action for each of the 70 home games this season, while the home team will provide coverage while the Power are on the road.
