Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
SAVANNAH, GA - The Savannah Sand Gnats slugged their way past the Rome Braves 10-4, in front of 2,507 fans on Monday night at Historic Grayson Stadium.
The Augusta GreenJackets held on to beat Charleston 7-4 Monday to maintain a one-game lead over Savannah for first place in the SAL Southern Division with six games to play in the season's first half. The Gnats finish the half with four games in Augusta beginning on Thursday night.
The Gnats gave up two unearned runs in the top of the first, but took control of the game with five runs in the bottom of the first inning. Savannah's first six batters all reached, as ten Gnats went to the plate in the first inning. After CF Pedro Zapata began the inning with a walk, 1B Michael Fisher tied the game at 2-2 on a home run down the left field line. SS Wilmer Flores and LF Juan Lagares then followed with singles to put runners at first and second. 3B Jefry Marte doubled down the left line to bring home Flores. C Kai Gronauer followed with a double of his own, a booming shot over the head of the Braves' RF Cory Harrilchak, chasing home Lagares and Marte for a 5-2 lead for Savannah.
Brandon Moore held Rome to one unearned run in six innings to earn his third win of the year.
Savannah added a run in the third to make the score 6-3 when Gronauer singled home Marte who had doubled to start the inning. The Gnats added three more runs in the fifth. Lagares completed the Savannah scoring by drilling a line drive home run over the left field wall in the sixth. Marte finished 3-4 with a pair of doubles and three runs scored.
The Gnats scored 10 runs at home for the first time in 2010. Their previous high was the nine runs the team scored in a 9-3 win over West Virginia on Opening Night on April 8.
The Gnats and Braves play game two of their three-game set on Tuesday at 7:05 pm when LHP Jimmy Fuller (5-2, 2.13), one of the Gnats' six All-Stars, takes on RHP Caleb Brewer (1-0, 0.00) making his second start for Rome. The pre-game show begins on News/Talk 630 and sandgnats.com at 6:50.
