LAKEWOOD, NJ - The cardiac Claws pulled off another late inning comeback Monday night at FirstEnergy Park, hitting two home runs in the 9th for a walk off 5-3 win over the Lexington Legends.
Lakewood (38-26) entered the 9th trailing 3-2, but Anthony Hewitt led off with his seventh home run of the season off All-Star closer Kirk Clark (2-1) to tie the game.
Alan Schoenberger then drew a one out walk, and Jiwan James blasted his third homer of the year out to right-center on an 0-2 count to walk off a 5-3 victory.
With the win the BlueClaws stay one game up on the Hickory Crawdads atop the South Atlantic League North Division with six to go in the first half.
Lexington (33-31) took the lead in the 5th, with a run scoring on a wild pitch by BlueClaws starter Jarred Cosart. Lakewood quickly answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning, as Stephen Batts and Jonathan Villar drew bases loaded walks against Legends RHP Robert Donovan.
Lexington came right back to tie the game in the 6th, and went ahead on a sac-fly RBI by catcher Rene Garcia in the 8th.
Luke Wertz (2-1) pitched a scoreless 9th for the win. He has now gone 19 2/3 innings without allowing an earned run.
Jarred Cosart threw seven strong innings for Lakewood, giving up two runs on five hits and striking out six.
Tuesday at 7:05 pm BlueClaws RHP Brody Colvin (3-6, 4.99) takes on Legends RHP Tanner Bushue (3-3, 3.95).
