Charleston RiverDogs News Release
CHARLESTON, SC - Augusta nabbed a 5-1 lead after three innings and was aided by a season-high tying five errors from Charleston to lead the GreenJackets over the RiverDogs, 7-4, in front 2,176 fans in South Atlantic League action at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park Monday night.
With the win, Augusta climbs to 39-25, while Charleston drops back-to-back games and falls to 29-34.
On the second pitch of the game, Evan Crawford cranked his second home run of the season inside the left-field pole for a 1-0 lead against RiverDogs starter Sean Black (4-5).
Charleston tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom half against Augusta's Brian Irving on Zoilo Almonte's two-out infield RBI single.
Black retired the first two batters in the second before allowing a triple to Ryan Lollis, but the throw from the outfield glanced off the glove of Emerson Landoni permitting Lollis to the plate and a 2-1 GreenJackets lead.
Three RiverDogs errors proved to be the difference in the third inning, as the lead grew to 5-1. A two-run double by Nick Liles and a RBI single from Chris Dominguez cemented the frame.
However, after Dan Cook reached first on the inning's third error to load the bases, there was a small explosion causing Riley Park to lose electrical power and suspend play for 20 minutes. When the game resumed, reliever Ronny Marte retired the final two batters to keep the bases loaded.
Black lasted just 2.2 innings, surrendering five runs on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
Augusta benefited from another Charleston error with two outs in the fifth, when Ydwin Villegas' groundball was mishandled sending Luke Anders home with a 6-1 advantage.
Lollis stroked a RBI double in the seventh to give the GreenJackets their biggest lead at 7-1.
In the bottom half, Charleston briefly rallied against Augusta reliever Devan Kline receiving a single from J.R. Murphy, a double from Jimmy Paredes and an opposite-field three-run home run by Almonte for his team-best ninth of the year and a 7-4 tally.
Mitch Lively calmed the storm by retiring the side in order in the ninth to notch his first save of the season. Irving (4-1) pitched 5.0 innings for Augusta, giving up only a run on three hits with a walk and five punchouts in just his third career start.
Almonte posted the first four RBI game of the year for Charleston going 2-for-4 with a home run, while Paredes also had a pair of doubles. The bottom five of the RiverDogs order combined to go 0-for-19.
Game two of this three-game series is set for a 7:05 p.m. first pitch on Tuesday night. Charleston sends right-hander Jose Ramirez (2-4, 3.31) to the mound, while Augusta counters with right-hander Jeremy Toole (2-2, 2.11).
