Hagerstown Suns News Release
In their first game at McCormick Park in Asheville, NC since August 11th, 2007 the Suns fell 8-3 on Monday.
The Suns opened the scoring in the top of the first inning. Second baseman Jeff Kobernus doubled down the left field line on the first pitch of the game and later scored on third baseman Steven Souza's single up the middle.
The 1-0 lead held until the bottom of the third as Suns starter Josh Smoker (0-7) started off well. Smoker struck out two batters in each of the first two frames, but ran into trouble in the third. Asheville netted four runs on three hits, including a two-run home run from Joe Sanders, giving the Tourists a 4-1 lead.
From there, the Suns never found any traction on the scoreboard. Hagerstown netted a run on two hits in the top of the fifth inning, but Sanders answered for Asheville with his second homer of the contest in the bottom of frame; a solo shot giving the Tourists a 5-2 lead.
In the sixth, the Suns again responded as first baseman Justin Bloxom homered to center field, his second home run of the season and bringing the Suns within two runs at 5-3.
In the top of the seventh, the Suns wasted their final real opportunity. Catcher Sandy Leon led off the inning with a walk and DH Brett Newsome singled off Asheville starter Nick Scnhaitmann (4-5). Schnaitmann was then replaced by right hander Alan DeRatt who walked Kobernus to load the bases with nobody out.
DeRatt got out of the inning unscathed, however as Fransico Soriano and Souza both struck out looking and Bloxom grounded out, leaving the bases loaded.
Asheville tacked on one run in the seventh and two in the eighth against Paul Applebee to bring the final score to 8-3.
Smoker ended up with the loss for Hagerstown, going five innings and allowing five runs including the two home runs to Sanders. The lefty from Calhoun, GA did strike out eight batters in his five innings of work.
Schnaitmann got the win for Asheville going six innings, and allowing three runs on nine hits with two walks and three strikeouts. DeRatt earned the save with three scoreless innings of work.
The Suns and Tourists will play the second game of their three-game series on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m.
