MONDAY: West Virginia lost the series opener to the Greensboro Grasshoppers 4-2 on Monday night at Appalachian Power Park. The Grasshoppers plated two runs in the first and a run in the second against Gabriel Alvarado. The Power scored a pair of runs in the third on a ground out by Adenson Chourio and a base hit by Evan Chambers. Austin Markel's solo home run closed out the Greensboro scoring. Alvarado took the loss, while Jose Alvarez earned the win. Sandy Rosario picked up his first save for the Grasshoppers.
STARTERS VS. RELIEVERS: Power starting pitchers are 5-10 this season with an earned run average of 4.53, while West Virginia relievers are 5-4 with a 3.22 ERA. Both the starters and relievers have retired 69 batters on strikes, although the starters have done this over 111.1 innings while the bullpen has needed 92.1 innings to record the same number of strikeouts.
HIGHS AND LOWS: Statistically speaking, Power hitters matched one season high and one season low in Monday's loss. West Virginia hitters walked six times against Curtis Petersen last night, matching their high mark of the season, first set on April 25 in game two of the doubleheader at Kannapolis. Power hitters only reached base, however, on three hits. Monday marked the third time this season that Power hitters only managed three hits in a game, matching the output on April 9 at Savannah (5-0 loss) and April 14 at Charleston (2-0 win).
SPLIT 'EM: The Power went 4-4 on their road trip to Kannapolis and Greenville, taking three out of four from the Intimidators before dropping three of four against the Drive. West Virginia hit .321 during the Kannapolis series, scored 24 runs, and allowed 13. Conversely, West Virginia batted at a .173 clip during the Greenville series, scoring only 15 runs while allowing 27. The Power are 7-9 on the road this season and do not play at Kannapolis or Greenville again.
HISTORY WITH THE 'HOPPERS: The Power won the 2009 season series with the Grasshoppers 9-5. West Virginia won six of eight games at Appalachian Power Park and split a six-game set at Greensboro. The Power have gone 23-11 since 2005 at home against the Grasshoppers, while winning 22 of 33 at NewBridge Bank Park in Greensboro.
WELKER'S WIN: Duke Welker earned the win with a scoreless inning during last Tuesday's series finale at Kannapolis. The victory was Welker's first since April 1, 2008 against Greenville while pitching for Hickory, the Pittsburgh Pirates SAL affiliate at the time. Welker pitched in 33 games between victories, spanning 103 innings.
POWER POINTS: Evan Chambers leads the SAL with 19 walks in 22 games. Chambers led the NYPL last season with 50 walks in 58 games... Power pitchers compiled the seventh best ERA during the month of April at 3.80. Rome had a league-low staff earned run average of 2.71, while Asheville had the league's highest at 4.81.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh had Monday off and opens a series with the Chicago Cubs at PNC Park tonight... Indianapolis beat Lehigh Valley 4-1... Altoona lost 9-5 at Richmond... Bradenton lost 1-0 at Palm Beach.
ON THE AIR: All 140 West Virginia Power games can be heard on ESPN Radio 1490 AM in Charleston, WV, across the state on the Power Radio Network, and online at milb.com. Adam Marco will call the action for each of the 70 home games this season, while the home team will provide coverage while the Power are on the road.
