May 4, 2010 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
For the third time this season the Kannapolis Intimidators are back at the .500 mark as they slugged around seven extra base hits en route to an 8-1 victory on Tuesday night in Lexington, KY. The Intimidators have won four straight and the Lexington Legends have lost six straight.
The Intimidators (13-13) started the slugging in the top of the third inning in a 0-0 ballgame as Rafael Vera slapped a double, followed by a run-scoring double Daniel Wagner to make it 1-0. After an error allowed another run to score, Ian Gac hit his team-leading fourth home run to dead center over the 16 foot wall 401 feet away to make it 4-0 Intimidators.
Matt Hopps was the starter for the Intimidators and worked out of a jam in the second to keep it at 0-0. He then worked into trouble again in the third and had to leave the game due to injury. Matt Wickswat entered the game with runners at second and third with one out and worked out of the inning without allowing a run. Wickswat (2-3) would work 4.2 innings without allowing a run. He struck out six and walked just one.
The Intimidators added a run in the fifth as Wagner singled, was balked to second and got to third and home on wild pitches. At that point it was 5-0 and the Intimidators never looked back.
The Legends (11-15) starter Brandt Walker (1-2) started well in the first two innings but struggled in the third. He went 4.2 total and allowed five runs, four earned in the loss.
The Intimidators had six doubles, two by Jose Vargas, one by Kyle Colligan and another by Gac among the others. They had 12 hits total and multi-hit games for Gac, Vargas, Colligan and Wagner. The Intimidators added two extra runs in the ninth to extend their lead from 6-1 to 8-1.
Garrett Johnson worked 1.2 strong and scoreless innings out of the pen for the Intimidators in the win.
The Intimidators are now 8-2 in road games and have won four straight for the first time this season. They look to get a game above .500 for the third time this season on Wednesday at 10:05 am. Justin Collop (0-2) will face Tanner Bushue (1-1) as Kannapolis looks to be successful in their attempt to get above .500 for the first time in their three tries.
