Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
Lakewood, NJ (May 27, 2009) - The West Virginia Power out-hit the Lakewood BlueClaws 10-6 at FirstEnergy Park on Wednesday afternoon, but the BlueClaws scored early and often to take the second game of the series, beating the Power 5-3.
Lakewood scored in the first three innings to develop a four run cushion. Travis Mattair singled with two outs in the bottom of the first to score Anthony Gose, and the BlueClaws took a 2-0 lead in the second when Sebastian Valle walked with the bases loaded. Lakewood scored twice in the third inning to take their largest lead of the game. Mattair scored the first run on a wild pitch and Harold Garcia drove in the second run on a sacrifice fly.
The Power pulled within a run after scoring three times in the fourth inning. Chase D'Arnaud started the inning with a walk, stole second base, moved to third on a Calvin Anderson's fly out and scored on Jeremy Farrell's groundout. Austin McClune's double down the right field line scored West Virginia's final two runs.
Lakewood scored an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning to pull away. Korby Mintken ripped a two out double and scored on Garcia's base hit. In the ninth, Josue Peley, Greg Picart and Quincy Latimore hit three straight one-out singles to load the bases, but D'Arnaud popped out and Calvin Anderson grounded out to end the game with the tying runs in scoring position.
Jon Velasquez (6-2) was tagged for three runs on five hits over five innings, and struck out four, while walking three in a winning effort. B.J. Rosenburg (7) worked two scoreless innings of relief to get the save. Gabriel Alvarado (2-3) struggled with control issues, and was tagged with the loss after hitting two batters, walking four, and allowed four runs on three hits over three innings. Wilson Ortiz tossed three scoreless innings of one hit relief for the Power. Phillies left-hander J.C. Romero made a rehab appearance for the BlueClaws, and tossed two perfect innings of relief.
West Virginia fell to 18-28 after the loss, and the BlueClaws improved to 26-19 with the win. Eight West Virginia batters hit safely at least once, and every batter reached. Anderson and Farrell both paced the Power with two-hits each. The loss marked the sixth time this season that West Virginia lost a game in which they out-hit their opponent. They have scored 33 runs on 57 hits over the first six games of the road trip.
West Virginia will continue the four game series with the Lakewood BlueClaws at First Energy Park on Thursday night. Right hander Maurice Bankston (1-4, 5.02) will start for the Power and the BlueClaws will counter with right hander Tyler Cloyd (4-2, 3.14). The first pitch is scheduled for 6:35 PM.
