RiverDogs Overhauled Hot Rods

CHARLESTON, SC - Mitch Abeita smacked a pair of hits including a solo home run and knocked in three runs as the Charleston RiverDogs overhauled the Bowling Green Hot Rods, 7-2, in South Atlantic League action Wednesday in front of 5,862 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

With the victory, Charleston remains atop the Southern Division standings and jumps to 26-20 on the season while Bowling Green falls to .500 at 23-23. The RiverDogs won their third straight against the Hot Rods and complete the eight-game homestand with a 6-2 record.

The RiverDogs seized and early 3-0 lead in the home half of the first when Abraham Almonte singled up the middle to leadoff the game and then scored after Dan Brewer's triple to center. David Adams was hit by a pitch and then Corban Joseph smacked a single to right that plated Brewer and sent Adams to third. Jose Pirela laced a line drive single to center that knocked home Adams for the inning's third run.

Bowling Green sliced into Charleston's 3-1 advantage in the fourth frame when Jake Jefferies drew a leadoff walk, trotted to second on Kyeong Kang's walk and then scored on consecutive groundouts for the Hot Rods first run.

Charleston extended its 6-1 lead in the sixth inning when Pirela slapped a single up the middle and then advanced to second on Neall French's single to left. Mitch Abeita smashed a two-run double to the right-center field gap that plated Pirela and French. Brewer followed with a line drive single to center that scored Abeita.

The Hot Rods add a run to make the score 6-2 in the top of the eighth when Anthony Scelfo lined a double to right, advanced to third on a groundout and the scored on Jefferies infield single.

Abeita cracked his second home run of the season, a solo blast over the left field wall to leadoff the RiverDogs half of the eighth to make the score 7-2.

Charleston starter Manny Banuelos (2-2) held Bowling Green to one run on two hits and two walks while striking out four en route to the win.

RiverDogs reliever Cory Arbison (SV, 1) earned his first save of the season when he silenced the Hot Rods for one hit, one walk and two strikeouts over the final 1.2 shutout innings pitched.

Hot Rods starter Tyree Hayes (2-3) earned the defeat after he allowed three earned runs off five hits and one walk with one strikeout in 3.0 innings pitched in his first start of the season.

The RiverDogs pounded 13 base knocks lead by quintet of Charleston bats who smacked a pair apiece while the Hot Rods collected six hits lead by Scelfo's two base knocks.

The RiverDogs embark on an eight-game road trip beginning with a four-game set against the Greenville Drive, an affiliate of the Boston Red Sox. Charleston gives the ball to right-hander Brett Marshall (2-3, 4.94 ERA) while Greenville is scheduled to counter with righty Caleb Clay (1-2, 4.50 ERA) as first pitch is scheduled for the series opener Thursday at 7:05 p.m.
