Hickory Crawdads News Release

SALISBURY, MD - C Doug Hogan's grand slam powered a six-run top of the third inning, as the Hickory Crawdads took the second game of a four-game set, 9-6, against the Delmarva Shorebirds, before 5,833 fans at Arthur Perdue Stadium on Wednesday afternoon. RHP Wilfredo Boscan (3-1) was activated off the disabled list prior to the game and started the contest for the Crawdads.

The Crawdads (24-22) jumped on LHP Cole McCurry (3-3) and the Shorebirds (24-19) with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. DH David Paisano led off the inning with a single, before stealing his way to second base. 2B Mike Hollander then drew a walk, putting two on with no outs for 1B Erik Morrison. Morrison came through with a double down the left field line, bringing in Paisano and moving Hollander to third. After RF Mike Bianucci popped out to short, 3B Matt West drove a sacrifice fly to center field, plating Hollander and making it 2-0.

The Crawdads blew the game open with a season-high six runs in the top of the third inning, expanding their lead to 8-0. The inning started with a solo home run by Paisano, his first homer of the season. Hollander then got on board with a base hit, followed by a walk drawn by Morrison. Bianucci ripped a single to left field to score Hollander from second and make it 4-0. West then singled to left to load the bases and chase McCurry from the game, still with no one out. Facing RHP Colin Allen, LF Cristian Santana came up next and popped out to shallow right field, keeping the bases loaded for C Doug Hogan. Hogan wasted no time unloading the bases, belting the first pitch of his at-bat over the left field wall for his first grand slam of the season and team-leading seventh homer, doubling the Crawdads lead with one swing, making it 8-0.

Boscan continued to shut down the Delmarva offense, retiring 11 Shorebirds in a row from the second to the fifth inning. Boscan dealt a total of five shutout innings, giving up just two hits and one walk before giving way to RHP Trevor Hurley for the sixth inning.

The Shorebirds refused to go quietly, plating three runs against Hurley in the bottom of the seventh, and then struck for three more over the course of RHP Fabio Castillo's two innings of work in the eighth and ninth. The Crawdads tacked a run on in top of the eighth inning, when Santana drew an RBI walk with the bases loaded to account for Hickory's ninth run, as Castillo and the Crawdads hung on for the 9-6 win. Boscan registered the win for his third consecutive victory, dating back to before his DL stint, while McCurry was tagged with the loss for Delmarva.
