Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
The West Virginia Power fell 3-1 on Friday night to the Charleston RiverDogs at Appalachian Power Park. The RiverDogs broke a 1-1 tie in the eighth inning and notched their second win during the first three games of the series.
West Virginia took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Dan Grovatt hit a 3-1 pitch from Vidal Nuno over the right field wall on to Morris St. for his seventh home run of the season. The long ball marked the second straight day that the Power All-Star hit a solo home run off RiverDogs pitching.
Zack Von Rosenberg pitched five shutout innings to start the game for the Power. The right-hander allowed a base hit in the first and retired the next eight batters before hitting his first spot of trouble. In the top of the fourth, Kevin Mahoney reached on an error and Von Rosenberg walked the next two batters to load the bases before induced a fly and getting Taylor Grote on strikes to end the inning.
In the top of the sixth, Brooks Pounders relieved Von Rosenberg, but only threw one pitch before leaving with an injury. Kevin Decker replaced him and hit Mahoney with a pitch. Kelvin De Leon followed with a run scoring double to tie the game at one.
Charleston took the lead against Decker and West Virginia in the eighth inning. Mahoney and De Leon reached on back-to-back singles and moved to second and third, respectively, on a sac bunt. After Shane Brown was hit by a pitch, Grote doubled in a pair and gave the RiverDogs a 3-1 lead.
Decker (3-5) took the loss after allowing all three runs in two and two-thirds innings of work, while Tommy Kahnle (2-5) earned the win with three innings of shutout relief of Nuno. Mark Montgomery pitched a scoreless ninth for his tenth save of the season.
The three RiverDog pitchers combined to limit the Power offense to just three hits and five total baserunners in the game as Charleston evened this season series out at seven wins apiece with one game remaining.
The Power and RiverDogs close this season series and homestand on Saturday evening at 7:05 at Appalachian Power Park. West Virginia will send Jameson Taillon to the mound against Charleston starter Nathan Forer.
