CHARLESTON, W. Va. - Taylor Grote rapped a two-run single in Charleston's decisive eighth inning, pulling out a 3-1 victory over West Virginia in South Atlantic League action at Appalachian Power Park Friday evening.
With the triumph, the Dogs improved to 20-27, 46-71 overall, while West Virginia fell to 20-27, 55-60 overall.
Dan Grovatt gave West Virginia a 1-0 lead in the second with a solo home run - his second in as many games and seventh of the year - off RiverDogs starter Vidal Nuno.
Charleston was rendered helpless by Power starter Zack Von Rosenberg, who kept the RiverDogs off the board through 5.0 innings for the second straight time dating back to July 25. The 6'5" right-hander hummed three-hit ball, giving up three walks with four strikeouts.
He would not get the win; however, as Charleston broke a 14-inning scoreless streak to square the affair at 1-1 in the sixth on Kelvin De Leon's RBI double off the right-centerfield wall.
That run took Nuno off the hook, even though he pitched very well in his third SAL start. The 5'11" lefty gave up just the Grovatt home run in 5.0 innings, while issuing no walks for the third straight start and fanning six.
Charleston found its offense again in the eighth off reliever Kevin Decker (3-5), loading the bases with one out for Grote, who looped a two-run single into left to untie the score and put the Dogs ahead 3-1. The former College of Charleston allowed five hits in just 2.2 relief innings in losing to the Dogs for the second time this season.
Tommy Kahnle (2-4) was excellent out of the Charleston bullpen in earning his first win since April 9, penning 3.0 scoreless innings with a pair of strikeouts, while Mark Montgomery struck out a pair to get the save, his 10th in 10 opportunities.
Kevin Mahoney and Eduardo Sosa had two hits each in Charleston 10-hit attack.
Charleston and West Virginia square off one final time on Saturday at 7:05 p.m., with the RiverDogs pitching right-hander Nathan Forer (1-5, 5.22 ERA), while the Power send Pirates top prospect Jameson Taillon (2-2, 4.52 ERA) to the bump.
