BlueClaws Drop 3rd Straight to Grasshoppers

GREENSBORO, NC - The Lakewood BlueClaws fell for the 3rd straight day to the Greensboro Grasshoppers with a 2-0 loss on Friday night. Greensboro scored both their runs on solo Home Runs, and Lakewood was shutout for the 7th time this season. The game was delayed by 1 hour at the beginning due to rain, but weather did not impact the game once it got underway shortly after 8:00 pm.
It was an old-fashioned pitcher's duel with each pitching staff dominating the ballgame. Lakewood actually out hit Greensboro 5-3, but Greensboro made their 3 count. Lefty Jesse Biddle (5-8) started for Lakewood and pitched fantastic allowing just 1 run on a 1st inning solo HR by Marcell Ozuna over 6 innings pitched. He struck out 6 and allowed just 2 hits. Greensboro starter righty Alex Caldera (1-0) was just a little better shutting out the Blueclaws over 7 innings of 4 hit baseball while striking out 9. Lakewood reliever Hector Neris allowed the only other hit, a HR by Jacob Relamuto in the 7th inning that made it 2-0.
Bill Rice continues to do his job offensively for Lakewood as he had yet another 2-hit performance going 2-4 in the lead off spot. Edgar Duran, Carlos Alonso, and Jim Murphy all chipped in with 1 hit as well for the BlueClaws. The loss is Lakewood's 9th in their last 15 games, and the BlueClaws fall back to 4th place in the SAL Northern Division. Kannapolis won as well to push Lakewood 4.5 games out of first place.
On Saturday Lakewood will send out LHP Austin Wright (1-0, 1.64 ERA) to try and avoid being swept in the 4 game series. Greensboro will start LHP Greg Nappo (3-0, 4.67 ERA) in a battle of unbeaten lefties. First Pitch is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
