Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
(Charleston, WV - June 28, 2015) - The West Virginia Power crushed the Greensboro Grasshoppers 13-3 on Sunday afternoon at Appalachian Power Park. Eight of the nine players in West Virginia's lineup tallied a hit and the Power used a seven-run fourth inning to ensure a perfect record in the second half.
Greensboro took their only lead of the game with an RBI single in the first inning by Austen Smith but the Power seized control after that. In the second, West Virginia took the lead thanks to an RBI groundout by Elvis Escobar to score Michael Suchy and a sac fly from Chase Simpson which plated Jerrick Suiter.
Leading 2-1, the Power added two more runs in the third. Following the first triple of the season by Cole Tucker, Pablo Reyes hit a double on a popup behind second to plate Tucker. Reyes then scored on an RBI single by Suchy.
The Power led 4-1 when they scored seven runs in the fourth inning to break the game open. The 11-batter inning was highlighted by a sac fly from Francisco Diaz, an RBI single from Tucker, a two-run home run by Reyes, a two-run triple by Suiter, and an RBI single from Escobar, who had two hits in the inning.
Greensboro responded with a run in the fifth but the Power tallied two runs their next time up thanks to back-to-back home runs. Tito Polo pulled his first South Atlantic League home run. Following Polo's first home run, Diaz hit his first home run of the season over the right field wall to make it 13-2. It was the first time this season West Virginia went back-to-back since Edwin Espinal and Harold Ramirez hit consecutive home runs on June 8 last season.
Lost in the offensive output was the fantastic outing by Alex McRae (4-4) who put up his seventh quality start of the season with six innings of three-run ball while matching his season-high with six strikeouts. Jorgan Cavanerio (0-4) suffered the loss while Sam Street tossed three innings in relief.
The 13 runs and 16 hits by West Virginia's offense is a new season-high.
The Power (4-0, 41-32) conclude their five-game series with the Grasshoppers (0-4, 29-44) on Monday night at Appalachian Power Park.
