HICKORY, NC - Damek Tomscha led a BlueClaws offensive attack, which featured five players with multi-hit games, going 3-5 and driving in two as Lakewood blanked Hickory 9-0 on Sunday night at LP Frans Stadium.
The win is the third in a row for the BlueClaws (3-1/36-36) after dropping the first game of the second half on Thursday to Hickory (1-3/45-27).
In addition to Tomscha's three hits (one off his season high), Derek Campbell, Scott Kingery, Cord Sandberg, and Kyle Martin had two hits for the BlueClaws.
Elniery Garcia improved to 5-6 and threw seven scoreless innings to earn the win. It's the third time he's thrown seven innings in a game this year (12 starts).
The BlueClaws jumped out to the lead with two first inning runs - one on an RBI single by Damek Tomscha and another on a fielding error by Hickory pitcher Yohander Mendez (2 innings, 4 runs/3 earned), who fell to 0-1. In the third inning, Tomscha's RBI double made it 3-0 and Cord Sandberg followed with an RBI single. A wild pitch put Lakewood up 5-0, with the last run charged to reliever Ricardo Rodriguez.
Lakewood added to the lead with two runs in the fifth inning off Rodriguez on a two-run double from Kyle Martin, who has driven in five runs over the first four games of his professional career.
The BlueClaws scored twice more off Ariel Jurado in the seventh inning on an error by centerfielder Jose Cardona on a Martin single and on a Deivi Grullon RBI groundout.
Sandberg's two hits make him 18-40 over his last 12 games. Martin has driven in five runs in four games since joining Lakewood while Kingery is now 6-17 in four games as a BlueClaw.
Joey DeNato threw two scoreless innings in relief for Lakewood.
The series with Hickory concludes on Monday night. LHP Yoel Mecias (0-1, 6.00) starts for Lakewood against RHP Collin Wiles (7-3, 2.13).
