Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (June 28, 2015)- The Asheville Tourists used a five-run third inning to beat the Kannapolis Intimidators, 6-4, Sunday at Intimidators Stadium supported by Carolinas HealthCare System. The Intimidators (1-3, 36-37) out-hit the Tourists 10-9 but could not mount a comeback after the Tourists' big third.
Kannapolis opened up the scoring in the bottom of the second when John Ziznewski drove home Ryan Leonards from first on a double down the first base line.
In the third, Asheville scored all five of its runs off Intimidators' starter Yency Almonte who allowed five of his six hits in the inning, to make it 5-1. After Dom Nunez walked and advanced to second on a sac-bunt, Omar Carrizalez singled to center field, scoring Nunez. Forrest Wall walked, Shane Hoelscher then doubled, scoring two more runs. The next at-bat Drew Weeks lined a two-run home run to dead center, completing the five-run frame.
In the home half of the third, Louie Lechich crushed a no-doubt solo home run (4) over the wall in right field, cutting the Asheville lead down to 5-2.
With the score still 5-2 in the seventh, John Ziznewski again knocked home Ryan Leonard on a double to get the Intimidators within two, 5-3.
Yency Almonte (5-4) settled down after the third inning, but was charged with the loss, working 6.0 innings, allowing five runs on six hits while walking four and striking out four.
Sam Howard (3-8) earned the win by working 6.0 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out four.
Both Kannapolis and Asheville each added a run in the ninth but Josh Michalec secured the save (15), allowing one run on one hit while walking one and striking out two in the ninth.
Connor Walsh and Matt Cooper combined to go 3.0 innings, allowing one run on three hits while walking two and striking out two.
