Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, SC - Through seven innings, Sunday afternoon's game looked like a comfortable victory for the Greenville Drive. The Charleston RiverDogs had other ideas, exploding for ten runs over the final two frames and stunning the Drive by a 12-9 score.
Trailing 7-2 going to the top of the eighth, the RiverDogs scored six times in the inning, with the first five runs coming against Drive (2-1, 40-33) reliever Mario Alcantara. A single, hit by pitch and a walk loaded the bases, and a dropped fly ball plated the first run. Alexander Palma followed by smacking a game-tying grand slam over the Green Monster. Later in the frame, a passed ball gave Charleston an 8-7 lead.
Yoan Moncada knotted things up at eight with an RBI double to left-center, but the RiverDogs scored four times against Carlos Pinales (3-2) to pull away. Ryan Lindemuth began the frame with a solo homer to left, and the inning also included RBI hits by Chris Breen and Rainiero Coa and an RBI fielder's choice by Derek Toadvine.
Philip Walby (1-0) earned the victory for Charleston, and Joey Maher collected his second save.
The bullpen blowup resulted in Drive starter Jalen Beeks receiving a no-decision despite allowing only two runs over six innings with four strikeouts.
Nick Longhi put the Drive ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the first with a sacrifice fly to score Deiner Lopez, who drew a walk.
Nobody scored again until the bottom of the fourth when the Drive tagged Charleston starter Rony Bautista for five runs. The highlight of the inning was a Rafael Devers three-run double off the center field wall, capping a 10-pitch at-bat. Devers would later score on a passed ball, and Longhi singled and scored on a Mike Meyers double.
The RiverDogs got on the board against Beeks in the sixth with two runs on an RBI double by Angel Aguilar and an RBI single by Breen.
Devers went 3-5 with three RBI and was one of three Drive players with three hits, along with Bryan Hudson, who also stole three bases, and Mike Meyers. Breen and Palma each had three hits for Charleston.
The teams will wrap up the series on Monday at Fluor Field with a doubleheader beginning at 4:30 PM. Both games are scheduled for seven innings, and game two will begin no earlier than 7:00 PM. The pitching matchup in game one will feature Drive LH Dedgar Jimenez (5-3, 3.59) against RiverDogs RH Jordan Foley (1-2, 3.77). LH Jake Drehoff (1-0, 3.13) will start game two for the Drive against RiverDogs RH Matt Marsh (1-1, 0.98).
