Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
(Charleston, W.V. - August 23, 2015) - A late rally led to a 3-2 victory for the West Virginia Power in the series finale against the Lakewood BlueClaws on Sunday afternoon at Appalachian Power Park. Francisco Diaz hit a walkoff single to right and with the victory, the Power lowered its magic number to six.
Lakewood scored the first two runs in the third inning. After Power starter Colten Brewer walked the first two batters in the inning, they scored on a Damek Tomscha infield single and a squeeze bunt by Cord Sandberg made it 2-0.
West Virginia plated a run in the bottom of the third. After back-to-back singles by Kevin Newman and Elvis Escobar runners at the corners, Connor Joe grounded into a double play, which scored Newman.
After being held hitless from the third to the eighth, the Power rallied in the ninth. Michael Suchy led off the frame with a solo home run to left. Jerrick Suiter was hit by a pitch to put the winning run on base and Chase Simpson moved him over by drawing a four-pitch walk. After a fielder's choice took Suiter off the bases and put Simpson at second, Diaz hit the walkoff single to right field to score Simpson and give West Virginia its fifth walkoff of the season.
Brewer took a no-decision with just four hits over 5.2 innings. BlueClaws starter Ranfi Casimiro also picked up a no-decision with one run on five hits over six innings and picked up his 12th quality start of the season. Jose Regalado (5-5) received the win while Matt Hockenberry (4-4) took the loss after a blown save.
West Virginia (39-17, 76-49) concluded the season series with Lakewood (30-26, 63-61) with a 9-5 record and have an off-day on Monday. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. while pregame on Charleston's ESPN Radio 104.5 FM and 1490, the Power website, and the TuneIn Radio App is slated for 6:45 p.m.
