Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
ASHEVILLE, N.C. - West Virginia claimed the resumed game from April 20, 6-2, but was drubbed in the nightcap, 14-1, by the Asheville Tourists Friday evening at McCormick Field.
GAME 1: West Virginia 6, Asheville 2 (F/7)
HOW WE GOT HERE (APRIL 20):
West Virginia (10-6) scored a run in the second on a sacrifice fly by Bobby Honeyman, added two more in the third on a double from Onil Pena and a base hit from Ryne Ogren and posted a three-spot in the fourth against Ryan Feltner (0-3), with Jarred Kelenic launching a three-run bomb right before the game was suspended. Meanwhile, Logan Gilbert got through his first three innings of work very efficiently, not allowing a hit while striking out six and walking one.
The game was put into a rain delay after Feltner was removed in favor of reliever Jake Bird, and ultimately suspended in the top of the fourth with nobody out and West Virginia up 6-0.
THE RESUMPTION (MAY 31):
With the Power up 6-0 in the fourth and nobody out, Bird took the mound for the Tourists (7-10) as the game resumed and retired the first three batters he faced in order. West Virginia managed just four hits against Bird over their final four offensive frames.
Devin Sweet (2-2) echoed Bird on the hill for the Power, setting down the first seven men he faced as he worked his way into the sixth inning. With one out, Sweet issued a walk to Cade Harris and then surrendered a base hit to Will Golsan that pushed Harris to third, ending West Virginia's no-hit bid. Harris came in to score two batters later on Grant Lavigne's infield single to make it 6-1 Power.
Asheville tallied on another run in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single by Javier Guevara, but Sweet battled back to strike out Harris looking to end the game. The victory gives the Power a series win over the Tourists in their April 18-20 series here in Asheville.
GAME 2: Asheville 14, West Virginia 1 (F/7)
The Tourists (23-31) wasted no time getting to Ryne Inman (5-4) in the opening frame, as Golsan stroked a leadoff single, stole second and came around to score on Danny Edgeworth's RBI groundout for a 1-0 lead.
Asheville roared back to life in the second, sending 10 men to the plate and notching a seven-spot in the inning, tied for the most runs West Virginia (27-27) has allowed in a single stanza this season (May 22 vs. Greensboro, 9th inning). All seven runs came on a pair of home runs, as Coco Montes blasted a grand slam to straightaway center off Inman, and Grant Lavigne slugged a three-run homer off reliever Benjamin Onyshko to make it 8-0 Tourists.
The Tourists recorded another run in the third before tacking on their second big inning of the night in the sixth, notching five runs against Nick Rodriguez, who came on to pitch in the sixth, to extend their lead to 14-0.
The Power's lone offensive bright spot came in the seventh inning, as Pena took Asheville closer Alexander Martinez deep to lead off the frame, but Martinez settled down after that to finish off the game.
Colten Schmidt (1-2) was brilliant for the Tourists in his second home start, spinning six scoreless frames and ceding just three hits while fanning eight batters.
West Virginia continues its four-game series against the Asheville Tourists at McCormick Field Saturday evening, with first pitch set for 6:05 p.m. RHP Damon Casetta-Stubbs (2-3, 8.01 ERA) toes the rubber for the Power, while the Tourists counter with southpaw Alfredo Garcia (0-4, 7.98 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 5:45 p.m. on The Jock 1300 and 1340 AM, as well as online at wvpower.com and via the TuneIn Radio App and MiLB First Pitch App.
After their eight-game, seven-day road swing through North Carolina, the Power returns home for their final first-half homestand from June 6-12 against the Greenville Drive and the Delmarva Shorebirds. The home stretch includes a Rock 105 Two for Tuesday and Thirsty Thursday, a postgame fireworks show, courtesy of the West Virginia Lottery and Suddenlink, a Kidz Sunday Funday presented by the Shawnee Park Foundation, a Family Buck Day and a Pets in the Park Night. The two highlights of the homestand begin Thursday, June 6, as West Virginia hosts Power of Pride Night, sponsored by Rainbow Pride of West Virginia and Dow Inc., where the first 500 fans can receive a special pennant giveaway. Meanwhile, the club will celebrate 15 Years of the Power, presented by Appalachian Power, Saturday, June 8, with a special player canvas giveaway available for the first 1,000 fans through the gates.
