Asheville Tourists News Release
ASHEVILLE- The Asheville Tourists blasted a pair of Grand Slams on Friday night on their way to a 14-1 throttling of the West Virginia Power. Coco Montes and Kyle Datres each hit balls out of the ballpark with the bases loaded and Grant Lavigne added a three-run Home Run for good measure.
Colten Schmidt starred on the mound for Asheville. The left-hander spun six shutout innings and ran his consecutive innings streak without allowing an earned run to 19. Schmidt earned his first win with the Tourists in the process. Colten finished with eight strikeouts, allowed only three hits, and did not walk a batter.
The Tourists manufactured a run in the bottom of the first inning that scored on a Danny Edgeworth RBI groundout. In the second, Montes made it 5-0 with a two-out bases clearing Grand Slam. Montes worked the count and jumped on a high fastball that was sent well over the centerfield wall. After a pair of walks, Lavigne made it 8-0 with a towering three-run Home Run over the right field wall.
Asheville added another run in the third inning on Montes' fifth RBI of the night. Coco hit an RBI fielder's choice and later contributed a single in Asheville's five-run sixth inning. The big blow in the sixth was Datres' laser Grand Slam over the left field wall. Edgeworth also had an RBI single in the frame.
The Tourists finished with 13 hits and walked seven times in their series evening win. This is the second time this season the Tourists have hit two Grand Slams in one game. Asheville accomplished the same feat on April 9th vs. Charleston.
West Virginia did manage to win the April 20th suspended game that was completed prior to Friday night's scheduled contest. The Power led 6-0 when play resumed and claimed a 6-2 win. The two teams are back at in on Saturday evening with the first pitch slated for 6:05pm.
