GREENVILLE, S.C. - The Greenville Drive evened the series with the Delmarva Shorebirds with a 3-2 victory on Friday night at Fluor Field, as Alex Scherff worked 6.0 innings and allowed just one unearned run to earn his first win of the year.
The Drive (24-30) took the early lead with a lone run in the third. Jonathan Ortega drew a walk, before scoring all the way from first on an error by the shortstop on a fielder's choice to give the home team a 1-0 lead.
Delmarva (41-12) answered in the fourth with a run. A sac fly by Seamus Curran scored Greenville native Will Robertson to tie the game at 1-1.
Greenville reclaimed the lead with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Dylan Hardy drew a leadoff walk and Devlin Granberg doubled to left to put runners at second and third with one out. Jordan Wren followed with a single to drive in Hardy and two batters later, Brandon Howlett hit a sac fly to center to bring in Granberg to give the Drive a 3-1 lead.
The Shorebirds added one in the eighth in pull within a run. Doran Turchin singled to left to score Alexis Torres and make it a 3-2 game.
In the ninth, Logan Browning closed it out with a 1-2-3 frame, getting a strikeout and a pair of groundouts to earn his fourth save of the year and preserve the 3-2 Drive victory.
Scherff (1-4) earned his first win of the year, allowing just an unearned run on four hits in 6.0 innings pitched with three strikeouts against two walks. Delmarva starter Nick Vespi (3-3) suffered the loss, allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits with four strikeouts against three walks.
Three Drive players combined for the three Drive hits, as Granberg and Howlett each doubled and Wren contributed an RBI single.
The series continues on Saturday with first pitch at 7:05 p.m. Drive right-hander Thaddeus Ward returns to the bump, facing Delmarva right-hander Ofelky Peralta.
