LAKEWOOD, N.J. - West Virginia's offense was held to just five hits as Lakewood shut out the Power, 10-0, Thursday night at FirstEnergy Park.
RHP Josias De Los Santos (0-1) got off to a rough start in his Power (17-8) debut, allowing two runs in the first inning on a pair of RBI groundouts from Abrahan Gutierrez and Malvin Matos. The BlueClaws (9-18) would add another run in the second, as they loaded the bases with nobody out and extended their lead to 3-0 on Hunter Stovall's fielder's choice ground out.
De Los Santos would settle down after that, tossing two scoreless frames in the third and fourth before seeing his night come to a close. The right-hander ultimately allowed three runs on five hits with two strikeouts and two walks.
Ben Onyshko relieved De Los Santos in the fifth, but could not tame Lakewood's bats. The BlueClaws sent 10 men to the plate and scored five runs, tying the most runs the Power has given up in a single inning this season (3rd inning, April 8 at Lexington). Gutierrez brought home two as he reached on a fielding error by Bobby Honeyman. Matos followed that up with an RBI double to left, while Jonathan Guzman singled him in to make it 7-0 BlueClaws. Yerwin Trejo notched the final tally of the frame with an infield single to short to push the lead to 8-0.
Lakewood scratched across two more in the sixth against Devin Sweet, as the BlueClaws became the first team to post a double-digit score against West Virginia since July 19, 2018, when Lexington accomplished the feat.
Jarred Kelenic extended his MiLB-best hitting streak to 18 games with a ninth-inning bloop double to right-center off Ben Brown. The Mariners' second-best prospect is averaging 32-for-72 (.444) with six home runs, 11 doubles and 17 RBI during the streak.
Tyler McKay (1-2) earned the win after blanking the Power over five innings of work, ceding just two hits and striking out three. Brown tossed 3.2 innings of scoreless relief before Oscar Marcelino secured the final out by inducing a fly ball from Honeyman.
West Virginia continues their road trip in Greensboro, N.C., Friday night, as they begin a four-game series against the Grasshoppers at First National Bank Field, with first pitch set for 7:00 p.m. South Atlantic League ERA leader Clay Chandler (3-0, 0.31 ERA) takes the mound for the Power, while Greensboro sends righty Osvaldo Bido (4-0, 0.91 ERA) to the slab. Pregame coverage begins at 6:40 p.m. on The Jock 1300 and 1340 AM, as well as online at wvpower.com and via the TuneIn Radio App and MiLB First Pitch App.
