(Salisbury, MD)- The West Virginia Power beat the Delmarva Shorebirds 9-4 Saturday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. Elvis Escobar drove in three and Chase Simpson added two runs batted in to give the Power their second straight win and guarantee a winning road trip.
The Power took a 1-0 lead in the second inning after a Michael Suchy double and a run-scoring single by Tito Polo. West Virginia added a pair of runs in the third on a Pablo Reyes RBI-single and a sacrifice fly by Jordan Luplow for a 3-0 lead.
The Power extended the lead in the top of the fifth inning. Tyler Filliben tripled and scored on a two-base hit by Elvis Escobar, who later scored on a wild pitch to give West Virginia starter Stephen Tarpley a 5-0 lead.
Delmarva broke up the shutout bid in the bottom of the fifth inning with a pair of runs on three hits and an error. The Power would respond with three runs on three hits and two errors in the top of the sixth inning. Chase Simpson reached on an error, but was credited with a run batted in. Escobar doubled in a pair with his third hit of the game for an 8-2 West Virginia lead.
The Shorebirds added a run in the eight against Jake Burnette on two hits. The Power added a run on a bases loaded single by Chase Simpson in the top of the ninth and Delmarva closed the scoring with a un on two hits in the bottom of the ninth.
Tarpley (2-0) allowed two runs, both which were unearned, on seven hits over five innings with six strikeouts and one walk. Matthew Grimes (3-3) took the loss after allowing five runs on eight hits over five innings. Escobar and Polo led West Virginia with three hits apiece as the Power won their fourth game on this seven-game swing away from Charleston.
West Virginia and Delmarva close their series on Sunday afternoon at 2:05 pm. The Power will send right-hander Alex McRae to the hill against the Shorebirds' Josh Walker.
