Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
Savannah, GA - The Savannah Sand Gnats won their fifth straight game by defeating the Charleston RiverDogs 6-1 Saturday night at Historic Grayson Stadium. The Gnats have won 11 of their last 14 games. Meanwhile, Charleston has lost six straight.
Jon Leroux, the hero of Thursday night's game, homered again Saturday, this time launching a two-run homer to left field in the fourth to put the Gnats (24-25) ahead 3-1.
Savannah added a run in the fifth when catcher Tomas Nido singled home RF Wuilmer Becerra for a 4-1 advantage.
Two more Savannah runs in the seventh concluded the game's scoring. Singles from Becerra, 3B Eudor Garcia and Nido hit-by-pitch loaded the bases. Center fielder John Mora brought home Becerra with a sacrifice fly to center field, while Garcia tagged up and advanced from second to third. Leroux reached on a fielder's choice, with Nido out at second. Then, with Vicente Lupo batting, Leroux and Garcia executed a double steal with Leroux swiping second and Garcia stealing home.
The 'Dogs (24-25) scored their only run in the first off Savannah starter Scarlyn Reyes on an RBI double by 1B Connor Spencer. After that swing, Reyes retired 14 of the next 15 batters. Reyes struck out six in his six innings for the win, his fourth of 2015.
The Sand Gnats will look to complete the sweep against Charleston tomorrow at 2:05 PM. The Gnats will send RHP Corey Oswalt (3-1, 4.23), while Charleston will start RHP Andre Del Bosque (2-0, 4.64) in the finale. Sunday Kids Run the Bases after the game thanks to Papa Murphy's. Kids eat free on Sundays and gates will open at 1 PM.
