
Suns Drop One-Run Decision to Kannapolis, 3-2

HAGERSTOWN, MD - The Hagerstown Suns (25-24) mustered just two runs on four hits on Saturday night against the Kannapolis Intimidators (23-26), dropping the third game of a four game series by the final score of 3-2. The Suns are now an even 7-7 in one-run games this season, and they trail the current series against Kannapolis two games to one.
Kannapolis jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the second inning on Saturday. With one out in the frame, catcher Zach Fish hit a ground ball single to left, driving DH Mason Robbins from first to third. Two batters later, Robbins scored from third on a double to right off the bat of RF Michael Danner.
It was another RBI double in the seventh inning that pushed the Kannapolis lead to 2-0. This time it was LF Nick Basto who delivered the big hit, which came with a runner on first and two outs. The Suns were able to answer right away in the bottom of the frame thanks to a sacrifice fly by 2B David Masters to make it 2-1.
Each team scored one run again in the ninth to wind up setting the final score. In the top half of the inning SS Eddy Alvarez tripled with one out. Second baseman Christian Stringer then drove him home by grounding out to first to make it 3-1. In the bottom of the frame 1B Grant DeBruin began the inning by hitting a double to right. He both advanced to third and scored on consecutive groundouts to second to again make it a one-run game. However, Masters was unable to extend the inning any further as he flied out to center field to end the ballgame.
Starting RHP Thad Lowry (5-2) threw seven innings and gave up just one earned run on three hits and two walks while striking out three to earn the win for the Intimidators. He gave way to RHP Matt Cooper, who gave up one earned run on one hit and one walk while striking out one over two innings for his third save in four tries this season. Starting LHP Connor Bach (1-1) suffered the loss for Hagerstown. In four innings pitched he gave up one earned run on three hits and five walks while striking out four.
These teams will conclude their four-game series at Municipal Stadium on Sunday May 31. The Suns will send RHP Robbie Dickey (0-0) to the mound for his second start and appearance this season.
