Greenville Drive News Release
Lexington, KY - The MLB Home Run Derby doesn't occur until July, but the Greenville Drive (29-20) staged their own a little early, using three homers, including the first pro homer from Yoan Moncada, to rout the Lexington Legends (21-28) 11-4 on Saturday night.
With a 2-0 lead in the top of the third, Carlos Mesa was the first member of the Drive to play longball, as he cracked his fourth homer of the year to left field to score Francisco Tellez, who walked.
Mesa's homer tied him for the team lead for all of one inning, as Michael Chavis led off the fourth inning with an opposite field blast to right, his fifth homer of the season.
Moncada joined the home run party in the sixth, as following a Mesa single, he drove his first professional homer over the wall in left to push the Drive lead to 7-4.
Drive starter Jalen Beeks certainly appreciated the offensive outburst, as he improved to 5-1 after working seven innings and allowing only two earned runs with four strikeouts and no walks.
The Drive took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first against Foster Griffin (0-1). Mauricio Dubon doubled to begin the game and scored on Derek Miller's RBI single, and a Lexington error plated a second run.
Moncada added an RBI double in the eighth to plate another Drive run, and RBI hits from Miller, Tellez and Mesa were the highlights of a three-run ninth.
Mesa had three hits and three RBI on the night, while Moncada had a pair of hits and three RBI. Tellez collected two hits and scored three times, while Dubon and Miller added to the offensive onslaught with two hits apiece.
The series finale begins at 2:05 PM on Sunday afternoon. LH Jake Drehoff (1-0, 4.63) will make his first start of the season for the Drive, and the Legends will start RH Nik Stephenson (1-3, 2.70).
