Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
SALISBURY, Md. -- The Delmarva Shorebirds could not overcome three errors and numerous missed offensive opportunities in a 9-4 loss to the West Virginia Power on Saturday at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium in front of 7,745 fans.
The Shorebirds had no problems getting runners on base, as runners reached safely in eight of nine innings but failed to bring them around to score. Delmarva tied a season high by stranding 11 runners on base and hit just 4-of-16 with runners in scoring position.
For the third time this series, the Power struck first when Tito Polo singled home Michael Suchy, who reached via a one-out double. The Power then added on a pair of runs in both the third and fifth inning against Shorebirds starter Matthew Grimes to pull ahead 5-0.
Delmarva responded with a two-run rally of their own in the bottom half of the fifth to get back into the game. Guillermo Salas led off the inning with a single, and moved into scoring position when Ronarsy Ledesma reached safely on an error by Power third baseman Jordan Luplow. The first runs of the day for the Shorebirds then came home on a two-run single by Jomar Reyes, but the 'Birds could not capitalize further and left runners on second and third.
Reyes's impressive stretch continues after going 1-for-3 on Saturday. He now has 23 hits in his last 20 games. Conor Bierfeldt also had an good night at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a double. Bierfeldt and Reyes are tied for the team lead in doubles with 11.
West Virginia immediately answered by scoring three runs in the top of the sixth and were aided by a pair of errors by Ledesma.
The Shorebirds' offense still showed life in the later innings. In the bottom of the eighth, Riley Palmer led off the frame with a triple and scored on a single by Elier Leyva. The ninth inning featured Logan Uxa's second triple of the series, which scored Bierfeldt and ended Power reliever Junior Lopez's streak of 18 consecutive scoreless innings.
Delmarva will look to salvage a split in the series against the Power on Sunday at 2:05 p.m. Josh Walker will make his first appearance for the Shorebirds against Alex McRae (3-3, 3.95).
A number of events are scheduled for the game, including a Strike Out Hunger Sunday where fans can receive $3 general admission tickets by donating two canned food items at the box office. Sunday's game will also feature a postgame autograph session where fans can receive signatures from Shorebirds players and coaches.
