Falling behind early the Calgary Vipers (50-29) never recovered and were defeated 14-2 by the Edmonton Capitals (52-29) in the first game of a double-header featuring two seven inning contests at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. After developing an early deficit the Vipers gave up seven runs in the sixth inning to put the game officially out of reach. With the loss Calgary falls a game behind Edmonton for first place in the North Division.
Manny Ayala (3-2) recorded the loss by giving up nine hits and eight runs in five and a third innings.
Edmonton jumped onto the scoreboard in the top of the first inning when Enrique Cruz reached on a fielding error, Todd Linden singled, and Lou Santangelo hit a home run for a 3-0 lead.
The Capitals added to the lead in the third as Cruz, Linden, followed by Brent Metheny collected three straight singles while J.D. Closser later also collected a base hit for a run batted in and a 5-0 advantage.
In the fifth frame Edmonton's Linden went deep for a home run and a 6-0 lead.
Calgary got into the scoring in the bottom of the fifth inning when Wilver Perez doubled to extend his on-base streak to 51 games, Jimmy Rohan reached on a fielding error, and C.J. Ziegler knocked both guys in with a two-bagger for a 6-2 score.
Edmonton blew the game wide open in the sixth as Tom Collaro walked, Rex Rundgren singled, Matt Rogelstad doubled both runners in, Cruz singled, Linden grounded out for a RBI, three straight walks were handed out to Metheny, Jamie McGraw, and Closser for a run, while Collaro cleared the bases with a three-run double for a seven run inning and a 13-2 advantage.
The Capitals gathered another run in the seventh frame when Lou Pote doubled, Cruz singled, and Pote scored on a fielding error for a 14-2 lead.
The second game of this twin bill will take place at 6:30 on Tuesday August 23rd.
Calgary will conclude their home 2011 regular season at Foothills Stadium on Wiener Wednesday August 24th at 6:30.
Playoffs for the Vipers will start on Tuesday August 30th against the Edmonton Capitals.
