Guided by their starting pitcher the Calgary Vipers (51-29) defeated the Edmonton Capitals (52-30) in the second game of a double-header featuring two seven inning contests at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. Dusty Gober (7-2) recorded the victory after allowing two runs in six innings while striking out six batters. After falling behind 2-0 the Vipers tied the game in the third inning and defensively Louie Templeton made one of the plays of the year by diving horizontal at third base to knock down a line drive and start an inning ending double-play in the sixth which led to the Vipers scoring four runs in the bottom of the frame for the lead. With the win Calgary moves percentage points ahead of the Capitals for first place in the North Division.
At the plate Jeff Giacomini collected two hits and scored a run while on the mound Matt Hammons closed the game out with two strikeouts in an inning pitched.
Edmonton opened the scoring in the top of the first inning when Enrique Cruz doubled and Todd Linden drove in a run for a 1-0 lead.
Matt Rogelstad doubled the Capitals lead in the third frame with a home run for a 2-0 advantage.
Calgary tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the third as Templeton followed by Jeff Giacomini singled, Dusty Gober laid down a sacrifice bunt, Jonny Kaplan collected a sacrifice fly, and with two outs Wilver Perez doubled in a run to extend his on-base streak to 52 games.
The Vipers broke the tie in the sixth inning when Perez reached on a fielding error, Chad Ehrnsberger doubled in the go ahead run, C.J. Ziegler walked, Lino Garcia doubled in a run, Drew Miller singled in one, and a fourth run scored on a double-play for a 6-2 lead.
Edmonton rounded out the scoring in the seventh as Rex Rundgren singled, advanced to second base on a wild pitch, took third on a groundout, and scored on a fielding error for a 6-3 score.
Calgary will conclude their home 2011 regular season at Foothills Stadium on Wiener Wednesday August 24th at 6:30.
Playoffs for the Vipers will start on Tuesday August 30th against the Edmonton Capitals.
