DETROIT - For the second time this season, the Midwest League leader in victories was beaten by the Whitecaps. Mike Ekstrom was touched for three runs in six innings and fell to 13-4 in a 3-0 West Michigan victory over Fort Wayne at Comerica Park in Detroit.
Ekstrom, who is the probably game one starter in the first round of the playoffs for the Wizards is 1-2 against the Whitecaps this season. If the regular season ended today, West Michigan would face Fort Wayne in the first round of the post season.
Jeff Hahn threw six shutout innings as the Whitecaps starter and allowed all four Wizards hit. Detroit native Anthony Tomey, Freddy Dolsi and Kevin Whelan each followed with hitless shutout innings of relief.
Whelan earned his seventh save in seven opportunities.
Clete Thomas hit a ball to the spacious right-centerfield gap in to lead off the first inning for the 'Caps and wound up at third with a triple. Nick McIntyre drove him home with a single for a 1-0 lead. Josh Lee singled in the second, then scored on a double down the right field line by Brooks Colvin.
In the sixth, Thomas singled and stole second. He eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Jeff Frazier. Frazier went 0-for-2 and saw his 14-game hitting streak come to an end.
Matt Parrish, the son of former Detroit Tigers great Lance Parrish, played right field but went 0-for-3.
