
Chiefs Send Two Relievers to Daytona

PEORIA, IL- The Peoria Chiefs, in conjunction with the Chicago Cubs have announced that relievers Michael Phelps and Tim Layden have been sent to High-A Daytona of the Florida State League. The Chiefs, who won't play again until Wednesday, have not immediately had either player replaced on the roster which now sits at 23 players.
Phelps, a right-hander, was the Cubs 11th round pick this June out of Central Missouri State and had the best numbers of any Chiefs reliever this season. In 12 appearances, Phelps was 0-1 with a 1.59 ERA and a save. He allowed earned runs in just two of his 12 games, July 19th vs. Cedar Rapids and August 5th at Kane County. Phleps struck out 17, walked three and allowed just 12 hits in his Chiefs career.
Layden, a left-hander, was the Cubs 6th round pick out of Duke University in 2004. He made 38 appearances for the Chiefs in 2005, second highest on the team. Layden was 4-4 with a 4.62 ERA and four saves. In 50 2/3 innings, he struck out 53, walked 22 and allowed just two home runs. Layden's August ERA in nine appearances was just 2.84 and he picked up three straight wins out of the bullpen between July 31st and August 5th.
The Chiefs have Monday August 22nd and Tuesday August 23rd off before returning to Quad Cities for a 7:00 PM game on Wednesday August 23rd. Entering Midwest League play on Monday, the Chiefs are 26-31 on the half, six games out of first and five games behind in the Wild Card race. Peoria has 13 games left on the season including eight at home. The Chiefs next home game is Thursday August 25th against the West Michigan Whitecaps at 7:00 PM.
