Dayton Dragons News Release

South Bend, IN - The Dayton Dragons (23-34, 53-74) had a season long tying five game winning streak snapped by the South Bend Silver Hawks (33-23, 74-52) at Coveleski Stadium on Sunday afternoon. With a win over the Hawks on Monday in the series finale, the Dragons could still take three of four against South Bend and finish the eight game road trip at 6-2. Dayton was horrendous from a defensive stand point, committing four errors which led to six Silver Hawk runs as South Bend took the series finale 7-2.

The game was scoreless until the bottom half of the third inning when a Jordan Belcher dropped fly ball for the Dragons led to a pair of unearned South Bend runs against Ramon Ramirez (L, 3-7). Orlando Mercado's fly ball down the right field line was dropped by Belcher to lead off the inning. With one down and Mercado at second following the two base error, Brandon Simon doubled into the right field corner to score Mercado for a 1-0 lead. With two down and Simon still at second base, Alberto Gonzalez doubled to the gap in right center for an RBI and a 2-0 Silver Hawks lead.

The bottom of the fourth contained more defensive misery for the Dragons as two more errors led to another pair of unearned runs. A one out walk to Cesar Nicolas, an error by Bradley Key and another walk to Mercado loaded the bases. Billy Lockin picked up an RBI on a fielder's choice to push the advantage to 3-0 in favor of the Hawks. Simon was the next hitter and his routine ground ball to second baseman Jorge Mejia was thrown away allowing another unearned run to cross the plate for a 4-0 lead. Ramirez was finished after the fourth inning, allowing four unearned runs on two hits, with one strikeout and two walks.

Koley Kolberg (W, 5-6) took a no-hitter against the Dragons into the top half of the sixth inning. The only base runners in the first five innings came via Kolberg walks. Dayton finally got on the board and picked up its first hit in the sixth. Mejia led off the inning with a double and would score on a two out single by Gutierrez to cut the lead to 4-1. Kolberg allowed just three hits and one run in his 6.0 innings. The right hander struck out six and walked two.

The porous defense continued in the sixth as the Silver Hawks picked up three more runs, only one of which was earned against new Dayton pitcher Camilo Vazquez (ND). Vazquez did not help out his own cause with a walk, a double and a walk to open his night loading the bases. With the bases full of Silver Hawks a walk of Billy Lockin forced in a run for a 5-1 South Bend lead. A Gutierrez throwing error on potential force play at the plate scored the second run of the inning and the sixth of the game for the Hawks. Gonzalez added his second RBI on the night with a sac fly to right to give the Hawks a 7-1 lead.

Dayton picked up a run off Esmerling Vazquez (ND) in the top of the ninth inning. Jeremiah Piepkorn led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch. After advancing to third base on Chris Kroski's fly out to center, Piepkorn scored on Bradley Key's RBI single to close out the Dayton scoring at 7-2

Following off days on Tuesday and Wednesday, the Dragons up the four game series at Fifth Third Field on Thursday night against the Beloit Snappers. The opening game of the final home stand of the season is scheduled for a 7:00 PM first pitch. LHP Omar Segovia is scheduled to start for the Dragons on Thursday night, while the Snappers have not announced a starter. 1410 ESPN Radio WING AM will broadcast Thursday's game live, beginning with the pre game show at 6:30 PM.
