FOX CITIES STADIUM -- Lansing Lugnut rightfielder Eric Nielsen went 5-for-6 with a triple and three RBI to lead the Lugnuts to a 10-1 win over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Monday night. AJ Wideman pitched six scoreless innings and gave up three hits for his seventh win of the season. Jeff Clement had three of Wisconsin's six hits and drove in the only run of the game with his fourth homer of the season.
Lansing (62-65 overall, 24-33 second half) scored first for the third game in a row. An RBI triple by Nielsen in the top of the first inning put the Lugnuts in front 1-0.
Charlie Anderson made it 3-0 with a two-out, two-run home run in the third inning. An RBI single by David Hicks in the top of the fifth inning pushed that Lansing lead to 4-0.
Wisconsin (70-58, 31-27) loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the fifth inning, but did not score.
Lansing loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the sixth. They scored five runs. Nielsen singled in the first run of the inning. Anderson drew a bases loaded walk to force in a run. Hicks singled in another run. Then, Ryan Klosterman singled in a pair of runs for a 9-0 lead.
Nielsen's fifth hit of the game was an infield RBI single in the top of the seventh inning for a 10-0 advantage.
Wisconsin got on the board on a solo homer by Clement in the bottom of the seventh.
Nielsen came to the plate with two out in the top of the ninth and a chance for a chance to tie a Midwest League record of six hits in a game, but he grounded out to short. Travis Hanson of Peoria is the last Midwest Leaguer to have six hits in a game. Hanson did that feat on April 12, 2003.
The Timber Rattlers are off on Tuesday and Wednesday. They return to action on Thursday night against the Fort Wayne Wizards. Julio Santiago (5-3, 4.76ERA) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Joel Santo (4-8, 4.33ERA) is scheduled to start for the Wizards. Game time in Thursday night is 7:05pm.
