South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
South Bend, IN - When viewing or playing lower level baseball, it is not uncommon for some teams to struggle defensively in the pursuit of teaching young players how to play the game better. Monday night at the Cove, the pursuit of playing error free baseball was lost on the Dayton Dragons who committed four errors in the South Bend Silver Hawks 7-2 win over the Dragons.
The Hawks plated their first two unearned runs when Orlando Mercado opened the inning by reaching second base on fielding error by right-fielder Jordan Belcher. After Billy Lockin's bunt pop out to catcher John Purdom, Brandon Simon doubled to left-center field scoring Mercado and giving the Hawks a 1-0 lead. One out later with Simon standing on third, Alberto Gonzales doubled to center field to bring Simon in and give the Hawks a 2-0 advantage.
The Hawks added to their lead in the fourth. With one away, Cesar Nicolas walked and Wilkin Castillo put runners at first and second when he reached on a fielding error by third baseman Bradley Key. After an Orlando Mercado walked loaded the bases, Billy Lockin grounded into a force play scoring Nicolas for a 3-0 South Bend lead. With runners at the corners , a throwing error by second baseman Jorge Mejia on a Brandon Simon grounder allowed Castillo to score from third for a 4-0 Hawks lead.
Tha Hawks scored three more runs on another Dayton error in the sixth inning to close the scoring.
South Bend's Koley Kolberg (5-6) was the winner, while Ramon Ramirez (3-7) suffered the loss.
The Silver Hawks (76-52) close the regular season with a 12 game road trip to Clinton, West Michigan and Peoria beginning Thursday and will return home for game two of their first round playoff series on September 8. First pitch is slated for 1:30 PM.
