Stockton Ports News Release

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Stockton Ports finally have a win in the month of June, and their 10-game losing streak is history. Stockton built an 8-0 lead on the Bakersfield Blaze on Saturday night and rode it to a 9-4 victory, their first since May 29th. Stockton's win also snapped a 10-game win streak for Bakersfield as the Blaze suffered their first loss in the month of June.

Stockton got off to a fast start in the first inning. With two on and one out, Joe Bennie hit a three-run homer to right-center to give the Ports a 3-0 lead. Stockton took advantage of a Blaze error and added a run in the third as a throwing error by catcher Tyler Marlette allowed Bennie to cross home plate and make it 4-0.

The Ports came through with their largest inning of the night in the fourth. With two on and two out, Bennie, John Nogowski and Sandber Pimentel came through with three straight hits to drive in four runs and make it an 8-0 Stockton advantage.

Blaze starter Anthony Misiewicz (3-5) suffered the loss after going four innings and allowing eight runs on a season-high 12 hits while striking out five.

Ports starter Kyle Friedrichs (1-1) worked comfortably with the big lead. Friedrichs kept the Blaze out of the run column over his first three frames. In the fourth inning with a runner at first and one out, Friedrichs speared a comebacker to the mound and made an errant throw to second that put runners at first and second with one away. Marlette followed with an RBI single that put the Blaze on the board and made it 8-1.

Friedrichs pitched through the sixth and gave up a solo home run to Austin Wilson with one out in the sixth that cut the Ports lead to 8-2. Friedrichs, though, would go on to earn the win, going six innings and allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits while striking out seven.

The Ports added a run in the top of the eighth as they took advantage of a Blaze error. With one on and tow out, John Nogowski reached on a fielding error committed by third baseman Joe DeCarlo. Pimentel followed with an RBI double to left to make it a 9-2 score. The run was unearned for Blaze reliever Thyago Vieira who pitched both the eighth and the ninth.

After Corey Miller tossed a scoreless seventh inning, Koby Gauna took over in the eighth. Chantz Mack opened the inning by reaching on a fielding error committed by Bennie. Wilson followed with a single to right that got by right fielder Seth Brown, an error that allowed Mack to score and Wilson to reach third. Jay Baum followed with an RBI single to left that cut the Stockton lead to 9-4. Gauna, though, would get a strikeout and a double play to avoid further trouble. Both runs he allowed in the eighth would be unearned.

Lou Trivino pitched around back-to-back two-out walks in the ninth to seal the victory for Stockton.

The Ports and Blaze wrap up their four-game set on Sunday night at Sam Lynn Ballpark. Brett Graves (2-5, 5.37 ERA) will make the start for Stockton, opposed by Bakersfield right-hander Tyler Herb (6-2, 2.81 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:45 p.m. PDT.
