Stockton Ports News Release
STOCKTON, Calif. - As happy as the Stockton Ports were to see the San Jose Giants leave town, they were equally as happy to see the Modesto Nuts arrive. Stockton, which had won seven of the 10 meetings between the two teams on the season entering Friday night's contest, made it eight of 11 versus Modesto as they earned their first shutout of the season by a final of 7-0. It was also the second time in a week that the Ports held the Nuts to just two hits as they did so on Saturday.
Stockton's first run came in the bottom of the first as Joe Bennie hit a one-out single up the middle to drive in B.J. Boyd and give the Ports an early 1-0 advantage. Stockton added a second run in the third as Boyd crossed home plate again, this time on a two-out RBI single by Sandber Pimentel.
Nuts starter Sam Howard (1-1) lost his command in the fourth as he issued back-to-back walks on eight pitches to open the inning. Argenis Raga came up next and laid down a sacrifice bunt that Howard fielded and proceeded to make an errant throw to first, allowing Jose Brizuela to score and make it a 3-0 game. After James Harris walked to load the bases, Boyd drive in two more runs with a double to the left field corner. After John Nogowski walked, Howard was lifted for Colin Welman, who yielded a bases loaded walk to Bennie to make it a 6-0 score.
Howard suffered the loss, going three-plus innings and allowing six runs (four earned) on five hits while walking six.
Welman allowed a run in the sixth as he walked Boyd to open the inning and, two batters later, gave up an RBI single to Bennie to make it a 7-0 lead. It was the only run allowed by Welman in two-and-a-third innings of work.
Ports starter Heath Fillmyer (3-1) worked extremely well with the lead throughout his outing. Fillmyer gave up a two-out single in the first and a one-out single in the sixth and pitched around both. He earned the win, going six scoreless innings and allowing one walk while striking out five.
Lou Trivino retired six of the seven batters he faced in two scoreless frames while pitching around an error. Trivino also struck out two in his outing. Koby Gauna pitched around a walk and a hit batter in the ninth and also struck out two as he pitched the final inning and preserved the shutout for Stockton.
Boyd became the third player this season to notch a four-hit performance as he went 4-for-4 and reached base all five times he came up while also driving in two runs. Bennie had a team-high three RBI for Stockton.
The Ports and Nuts play the middle game of their three-game series on Saturday at Banner Island Ballpark. Casey Meisner (0-3, 2.70 ERA) makes the start for Stockton, opposed by Modesto right-hander Carlos Polanco (0-1, 4.76 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m. PDT.
