Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release

Adelanto, CA - The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes dropped game one of the three-game set with the High Desert Mavericks on Friday evening, falling into second place with a 7-2 loss at Heritage Field.

The Mavs struck first in the first inning against Quakes' starter Tommy Bergjans, scoring three runs off of one swing of the bat. With one out, Luke Tendler tripled and Travis

Demeritte walked, setting up Jairo Beras, who clubbed a three-run shot to deep left field, his fourth home run of the season to make it 3-0 High Desert after the first inning.

The game stayed that way until the fourth inning, when Rancho made a brief comeback. Kyle Garlick led off the inning with a walk, and Yusniel Diaz tripled him home to make it a 3-1 game. Matt Beaty followed with a sacrifice fly to drive in Diaz to pull Rancho to within 3-2.

But then the Mavs pulled away.

In the fifth inning, Michael De Leon singled with two outs, and Scott Heineman popped his third home run of the year to give High Desert a 5-2 lead.

In the sixth, Bergjans' final inning, Demeritte crushed a solo home run, his tenth of the season, to make it 6-2 Mavericks.

High Desert scored their seventh and final run in the seventh inning after Luke Tendler drove in Seth Spivey with a sacrifice fly.

Bergjans (2-3) was tabbed with the loss after going six innings and allowing six runs on six hits. All six runs allowed by Bergjans came on three High Desert home runs. Jeff Malm allowed a run in the seventh inning and Scott Griggs pitched a scoreless eighth.

Felix Carvallo (2-0) picked up the win for High Desert, after 3.1 scoreless innings of relief.

Mavs starter Cole Wiper lasted just 4.2 innings after allowing two runs on four hits, but was knocked out of the game after struggling with his command and walking six.

Rancho Cucamonga (19-10) now sits one game out of first place, as they look up to High Desert (20-9) in the South Division standings after Friday's game. The Quakes continue their short three-game road trip on Saturday against the Mavs, sending Josh Sborz (2-1) to the hill in game two. He will be opposed by the Rangers #4 overall prospect, Luis Ortiz (2-1), who beat the Quakes on May 1st at LoanMart Field.
