Portland Winterhawks News Release

Hawks Happenings On The Ice:

Winterhawks rookie Nino Niederreiter has a seven-game point streak, a stretch in which he's posted three goals and six assists for nine points. With 14 total points on the season, he's tied with Red Deer's Ryan Nugent-Hopkins for second among WHL rookies in scoring, behind Kelowna's Shane McColgan. Fellow rookie Ryan Johansen, who had three points Sunday in Calgary, isn't far behind with 12 points on the season, while Spencer Bennett has posted 10 points.

Just 13 games into the 2009-10 season, two players have already surpassed their point totals from last season. Joe Morrow had seven points in 41 games last season, but is already up to 10 points in 12 games this season. Morrow is also tied for the WHL lead in plus/minus at +16. Meanwhile, fellow defenseman Troy Rutkowski leads the Winterhawks in scoring this season with 17 points in 13 games, after posting 15 points in 64 games last season. Rutkowski's 17 points ties him for the league lead for scoring among defensemen with Moose Jaw's Travis Hamonic.

Portland's 57 goals this season is second in the WHL, and they've done it with a balanced attack, with four players averaging at least a point a game (all players have played 13 games): Rutkowski (17 points), Chris Francis (15), Niederreiter (14), and Luke Walker (14).
