July 28, 2010 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Portland Winterhawks News Release
The Portland Winterhawks have released their tentative 2010-11 regular season schedule, with the first home game now set for Tuesday, September 28 against the Vancouver Giants in a rematch of the 2010 second round playoff series between the two teams. The Winterhawks will then play host to the Seattle Thunderbirds on Saturday, October 2 on a night when the team will be giving away Nino Niederreiter bobblehead dolls. Originally the October 2 game vs. Seattle had been slated as the home opener.
The only way to get the bobblehead doll is to purchase a 10-game, 18-game or season ticket package. Ten-game packages start at just $116. To purchase a ticket package, call 503-236-HAWK or visit winterhawks.com for more information.
The season opener has not changed, as the Winterhawks open the regular season on Saturday, September 25 in Seattle. All dates are tentative and subject to change, as the WHL will announce the finalized schedule on Tuesday, August 10.
The 2010-11 schedule will feature 25 of the team's 36 home games taking place on the weekend, with 10 games on Fridays, nine games on Saturdays, and six games on Sundays.
Notable aspects of this year's schedule include:
- The Winterhawks will host several family-friendly holiday games, including a game the night before Thanksgiving on Wednesday, November 24, a holiday break game on Tuesday, December 28 and the annual New Year's Eve game against Seattle on Friday, December 31.
- The longest homestand of the season will be six games, from October 20 - November 6.
- Portland will host their long-time rival Seattle Thunderbirds on October 2 and 22, December 31, January 8 and 22 and March 4.
- The defending WHL champion Calgary Hitmen, coached by former Winterhawks player and coach Mike Williamson, will come to Portland on October 13. Portland will host the rest of the Central Division teams this season, including visits from the Lethbridge Hurricanes on October 3, the Red Deer Rebels on November 5, the Medicine Hat Tigers on November 28, the Kootenay Ice on December 1 and the Edmonton Oil Kings on February 4.
- The team's longest road trip of the season takes place from November 9 - 16 as the Winterhawks go through the six Eastern Division teams, taking on the Swift Current Broncos on November 9, the Regina Pats on November 10, the Saskatoon Blades on November 12, the Prince Albert Raiders on November 13, the Moose Jaw Warriors on November 15, and the Brandon Wheat Kings on November 16.
- On four occasions, the team will play three games in three nights.
- The regular season finale will be a home game against the Spokane Chiefs on March 20.
As was the case last season, the Winterhawks are striving to play half their home games at the Rose Garden. The team will announce the venue for each game at a later date.
All games will begin at 7 p.m. except Sunday games, which will begin at 5 p.m. As of now the only exception is the 8 p.m. puck drop on New Year's Eve.
Season tickets for the 2010-11 season are on sale now. Prices start at just $10.50 per game while a limited number of front row glass seats are available at only $23.50 per game. Contact the Winterhawks at 503-236-HAWK or seats@winterhawks.com to secure your seat for all 36 home games.
