Portland Drops Game One of Preseason
August 31, 2018 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Portland Winterhawks News Release
The Portland Winterhawks opened preseason play with a 7-1 loss against the Spokane Chiefs on Friday afternoon. It was a fast tempo first period, but the Hawks were unable to hold on down the stretch.
Goaltender Shane Farkas had a strong first period of play, stopping all ten shots he faced. The Winterhawks had some prime scoring chances a few minutes into the game, but a Seth Jarvis shot off the post was as close as they would get to scoring in the period.
Tides turned after the intermission break as the Chiefs would tack on two goals in the second period. The Chiefs made it three unanswered before forward Jake Gricius buried a loose puck in the slot just over four minutes into the second frame. Rookies Cross Hanas and Kurtis Smythe collected the assists to help make it 3-1.
The rest of the third period belonged to Spokane. Forwards Carter Chorney and Adam Breckman each netted two goals in the game and centerman Michael King led all scorers with three points. Dawson Weatherill picked up the win in net, stopping 24 of the 25 shots he faced.
Portland takes on the Tri-City Americans Saturday morning at 11:30 a.m. Fans can tune in to the tournament's live stream radio broadcast by visiting EverettSilvertips.com.
